Work on Writing and Listen to Reading

Last week we introduced two more choices to our Daily Five Rotation.
Students have the opportunity to Listen to Reading on the iPads.

We also opened the Work on Writing Station

We are taking turns exploring our new stations.  Others continued to Read to Someone.  If we have an odd number looking for a reading partner, kids can choose a stuffed reading buddy.

Library

On Thursday we visit the library.  Students listen to Mrs. Ryan read them a story and then they can check out a book to keep in their book tub at school for the next week.  Students love to relax in the library reading their new books.

Weekly Poems

Each week we learn a new poem.  After we glue it in our Poetry Notebook, we illustrate a picture.  We are learning that pictures match the words in poems and stories.  Throughout the week, we will use the poem to recognize letter sounds, upper and lowercase letters, and new words we are learning. Here are some clips of our poems.

(I am having difficulty getting our videos to play. I will try to work on a solution...stay tuned.)

Read to Someone

On Wednesday during our Daily Five time, I announced that we would learn how to "Read to Someone."  Oh, there were cheers!  Kindergartners are so excitable...I love it!  I explained that there are still 3 ways to read a book and we reviewed those.  And we also discussed finding a place to sit, getting started RIGHT AWAY because READING IS IMPORTANT, being a good reading partner, and how to take turns reading.  Then, I let them get to it!  And Mrs. Bowling and I stood back like proud mamas because THEY DID AWESOME!

See that, they are sitting "Elbow Elbow, Knee Knee."

And the book goes in the middle.

Daily Five: Read to Self

We are getting started with our Daily Five routine.  The first choice is Read to Self.  We learn in Kindergarten that there are 3 ways to read a book.
1. Read the pictures.
2. Read the words.
3. Retell the story.

Here are some pictures of us practicing Read to Self.
