Spring is in the Air....I Hope!

Check out our new display window.  Is it too soon for this?   I am ready for Spring...who's with me!?

Duck for President

This week we read Duck for President by Doreen Cronin.  While reading we drew and wrote about the problem the animals had.  They didn't like to do chores!  So, they put Duck in charge of the farm. Duck decided that was too hard so he turned into a politician and ran for Governor and President. Neither were fun so he returned to life on the farm.  We also wrote about chores we had to do.  Then made our own ducks to display.

NEVER GIVE UP!

This morning we had an assembly with Matt Wilhelm, X Games champion and former America's Got Talent Contestant.  He spoke about perseverance and never giving up.  He also shared about his childhood and being bullied because he was different.  He told everyone that being different is special and talked about standing up for others and being someone's superhero.  What a wonderful message!  And, of course, he shared some tricks on his bike!  The kids loved it!  Here are some pictures from our assembly.  (Some are blurry, but he was moving fast!)

Monster Love

Monster Love

Oh my darlin', oh my darlin',
Oh my darlin', Valentine.
You are hairy and quite scary,
But I want you to be mine!
Love your smile and your style
and you smell of french fries.
You treat me oh so sweetly,
when you bat your three big eyes.

To go along with our poem this week, we made Love Monsters.  A project like this is always good practice for our listening skills.  Our monsters look great decorating our classroom.

We are getting excited for Valentines Day!  Valentines should be sent to school by Friday morning.  If you would like to send them earlier so they are not forgotten, we can set them aside in your child's locker until they are needed.  We will be passing out Valentines and opening them BEFORE the party on Friday, so I want to make sure everyone has cards at school.  I sent home a copy of our class picture to reference while making Valentines. Students may write names, if they would like or cut out the picture to glue on.  If you need another copy, please let me know.

Penguins

Last week we read non-fiction texts to learn about penguins.  First, we recorded our Penguin Schema, or what we knew about penguins.  After reading our book, students drew and wrote something they learned.  Here is the chart we made with this information.

Some of our New Learning included:
*They are birds.
*They do not fly.
*Penguins eat squid, fish, and krill.
*They swim in the water.
*There are many kinds of Penguins.  We especially liked the Rockstar Penguin.
They live in the Antarctic.
They use their flippers to swim.
They walk on ice.
They huddle together to stay warm.
The male penguins watch the egg while the female hunts for food.
The penguin sits on their feet to stay warm.
Baby feathers are not waterproof.

At the end of the week, we painted penguins.
